Universal Carrier

The Universal Carrier replaced four very similar vehicles with one design – it was hugely versatile and used in every theatre by the infantry, artillery and reconnaissance units.

The Universal Carrier could carry heavy weapons such as mortars or machine-guns, tow anti-tank guns, carry long range radios to call in artillery fire, evacuate casualties and was even converted to a flamethrower. It was by far the most produced armoured fighting vehicle of the war.

The Tank Museum’s Universal Carrier

Our Carrier was built in 1940 by the Sentinel Wagon Company in Shrewsbury. its wartime service is unknown but it was later used by the Military Vehicle Experimental Establishment at Chertsey. It came to The Tank Museum in 1981.
